Marietta English
Marietta English served as president of the Baltimore Teachers Union for twenty-one years. While there, she was always fighting for fair wages and improved working conditions for Baltimore City public school teachers, paraprofessionals and school related personnel.
English actively represented Baltimore teachers, paraprofessionals and school-related personnel in the state capital and at Baltimore school headquarters and worked for change and fairness in the classroom. She supported the BTU Professional Development Center (PDC), where members engaged in career development seminars and workshops. As president, English, also negotiated the most innovative contract for teachers in the United States. The contract allowed teachers to move up the salary scale at their own pace. Making them the highest paid teachers in the state at that time.
English was not only a classroom teacher, she also worked as a consulting teacher and a teacher mentor. She taught all grades from pre-K though grade eight. She was also a special education teacher.
English also served 13 years as president of AFT- Maryland. There she worked with the state locals to address issues of members around the state. That membership was almost 20,000.
English is a member of several civic, social and cultural organizations. She has served apresident of the National Alliance of Black School Educators. The only teacher who has served in that position. She has also served as president of the Maryland State Alliance of Black School Educators and the Metropolitan Baltimore Alliance of Black School Educators the local affiliate.
English is a life member of the NAACP where she serves on the local board and is the chairperson of the Branch Afro- American, Cultural, Technological and Scientific Olympics (ACT-SO) program
English continues to serve on several civic and social boards. She is a lifetime member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.
English is a graduate of Morgan State University and the University of Maryland College Park. She is married to Raymond English, a retired administrator and the mother Chantel English-Murray and R. Jay English who are both teachers and the grandmother to Trae, Ryan, Chase and Logan.
