Although Baltimore City has experienced a significant reduction in fentanyl overdose deaths since last reported in a 2023 New York Times article, it still has one of the highest rates in the United States. There are several initiatives in place to train community members on how to recognize the signs of an opioid overdose and administer Narcan nasal spray until EMS personnel arrive.
Narcan (Naloxone) is a medication used to quickly reverse or reduce the effect of an opioid overdose. Narcan administration training teaches you how to recognize an overdose and safely reverse it using a Narcan nasal spray. Medical background is not required.
In conjunction with the Baltimore City Health Department, the Empowering a Healthier Community Outreach Ministry is offering Narcan administration training in the hope of preparing a number of citizens to respond quickly to an emergency.
